GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Grand Junction is expected to hit temperatures as low as 5 degrees Fahrenheit and Montrose is believed to hit 0 degrees.
These temperatures, as explained by forecaster Dalen Brazelton, are coming from the north.
“It’s where really cold air, from Canada, comes down into the continental United States. Way further than it typically does.”
All of this giving the Western Slope uncommon conditions that include variables like ice that, according to Director of Community Relations for Xcel Energy Andrew Holder, contributes to many of the power outages Xcel sees affect their infrastructure.
“The larger percentage of what causes power outages is traffic accidents. Traffic accidents striking our infrastructure around the state.”
Xcel has placed teams in different locations across the state to respond to any possible outage, equipping them with the tools they need to keep the grid online.
Brazelton says if you do choose to head out this weekend, be prepared.
“Blankets, some extra jackets, maybe even some extra food in the car that’s available. Just in case something happens and you’re stranded.”
