Portions of Iowa City's biggest parking garage may close in the next few months. What to know:

A downtown parking garage is getting a facelift.

The Clinton Street entrance of the downtown Capitol Street Parking Garage, which is connected to the Old Capitol Town Center across from Starbucks, will close on April 16 as crews begin large-scale ramp repairs. All traffic must enter from the Capitol Street entrance, between the Old Capitol Town Center and Seamans Center, during repairs.

The Capitol Street ramp is the city’s largest parking structure, with space for 875 cars.

Some spaces on each floor of the parking garage will also be unavailable as repair work gets underway. City staff and the University of Iowa are coordinating to “minimize interruptions” for residents who use parking permits in the ramp.

The project is part of a long-term ramp maintenance effort by the city “to ensure safety and structural integrity,” the city said in a release.

Work is expected to last into the summer.
