Clancy announced three appointments that will grow its civils and energy work.
Jon Arnold became Clancy’s new operations director, joining the firm from Skanska where he was a project director.
Arnold’s recent projects included the Humber gas replacement pipeline, procurement for the Lower Thames Crossing scheme and the South East Electricity Substation Alliance.
In addition, Bryan Curtayne and Martin McGovern have been promoted to the executive board of directors.
Curtayne has been with Clancy since 2002 and McGovern has focused on the energy sector since joining the firm in 2010. He also previously worked for Skanska.
Chief executive Matt Cannon said they “will be incredibly valuable as we support clients in delivering on the UK’s infrastructure needs”.
In-spired move
Few achieve their childhood dreams, even fewer can claim to have been inspired by a cathedral.
But that’s exactly what happened to James Hammond, who has become the new regional technical manager for Vistry Thames Valley.
Hammond joined the firm from Bovis Homes in 2018 where he was a senior technical coordinator. But he has dreamed of working with buildings since he was 12.
He said: “With Salisbury Cathedral adjacent to my school, there was inspiration to be taken from at an early age. Ultimately, I knew that I wanted to work in the building industry.”
Rejoining the scrum
Tom Grundy
Getting a team over the line for a win is a natural for a former professional rugby league player who now leads the pack at homebuilder Anwyl.
Tom Grundy is the firm’s new managing director for Cheshire and North Wales. He is returning after a stint as managing director at civil engineering contractor Eurogold. He was previously commercial director for Anwyl Lancashire.
His professional rugby league career included Warrington, Leigh Leopards, and Swinton Lions.
Grundy said: “My father ran a small building company and so I have been around the industry from a young age. When my sporting career ended, it was an obvious path for me to take.”
Banking on Sam
Project management firm Bankfoot APAM has brought in engineering specialist Sam Crusz as project director.
Crusz previously held client-side consultancy roles in the UK, New Zealand and the US. Her previous role was director at Gardiner & Theobald.
Andy bows out
Regional contractor Speller Metcalfe has announced that the firm’s co-founder Andy Metcalfe is retiring.
He founded the family business in 1995 with joint-owner Steve Speller, who retired in 2022. They were spurred on by their own mixed experiences as quantity surveyors.
Today the firm has an annual turnover of £150m.
Son James, who was named as managing director in 2022, said: “While he will be missed by many, we are delighted that he can realise his retirement ambitions with the confidence that he is leaving the company in the good hands of our staff and great shape for the future.”
