Social media users roasted Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s sour look as he watched President Donald Trump lose it on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in real time on Friday.
“If Marco Rubio wants to save what’s left of his soul and his honor, he’d resign immediately,” wrote one X commentator.
Another X user added of his facial expression, “Marco Rubio regretting he took the job.”
Social media users took aim at Rubio as a “coward” and “one of the saddest people in the history of this f—ing world” for doing nothing as Trump’s unsuccessful meeting with Zelensky went viral.
“How we doin bud?” Slate politics editor Jim Newell asked Rubio in a post that sparked comedic memes about how miserable the former Florida senator must be.
“No one has wanted to be severed more than Marco Rubio in this job,” wrote Pod Save America host Jon Favreau, referencing the Apple+ show, Severance.
A.J. Catoline, an Emmy-winning editor on Ted Lasso, added, “Go lick Putin’s boot, Marco,” then added a Severance meme of his own.
Other shots at Rubio took a more serious tone over how the botched meeting could stall putting an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine.
“Marco Rubio looks absolutely disgusted. He knows deep down Zelensky is the one we should be defending but he sold his soul to MAGA,” wrote an X commentator about the moment.
Another added, “You literally could do a daily picture of Marco Rubio swimming in the misery of knowing he gave away a longterm Senate job only to get none of the prestige of being SoS and all the responsibility for letting kids and Ukraine die.”
Despite his visual disdain, Rubio put on a metaphorical brave face after the meeting in a tweet praising Trump for “putting America first.”
“Thank you @POTUS for standing up for America in a way that no President has ever had the courage to do before. Thank you for putting America First. America is with you!,” he wrote on X.
